Solar Metering Questions for Your Retailer

Published 3 min read

Solar installation, metering and retail billing are connected but separate processes. Confirm who arranges each step rather than assuming a completed roof installation means export metering and billing are ready.

Solar Metering Questions for Your Retailer

Agree the sequence with the solar installer

Ask the solar installer what network approval, metering changes and commissioning steps apply to the proposed system. Keep those answers with the retailer’s instructions. Existing smart-meter equipment may or may not be suitable as configured; it needs confirmation rather than an assumption based on appearance.

Do not operate or alter equipment to test export yourself. Follow the installer’s commissioning and operating instructions and confirm any remaining approvals. Installation completion and permission to operate are not interchangeable milestones.

Understand what the meter records

A suitable metering arrangement records electricity imported from and exported to the grid. That is not necessarily the same as total solar generation shown by an inverter application, because some generated energy may be used within the property.

Ask which readings will appear on your bill and which are available through a monitoring service. A difference between inverter and billing figures does not on its own prove a fault. Compare the same period and understand the meaning of each measurement before seeking investigation.

Ask about the account, not only the hardware

Confirm who requests the metering appointment, whether the account holder must authorise it and what fees or plan changes the retailer proposes. Feed-in arrangements, usage prices and time periods depend on the retail offer; do not assume a new meter guarantees lower bills.

If controlled-load equipment, batteries or multiple phases are involved, provide those details. Ask the retailer and installer to explain any implications for the existing arrangement. A metering change should not leave an important load or tariff assumption undocumented.

  • Is the current metering arrangement suitable for the approved solar system?
  • Who books and confirms any required appointment?
  • What billing changes apply, and when do they take effect?
  • What evidence confirms that all required stages are complete?

Resolve separate electrical work explicitly

If a meter enclosure or switchboard needs work, obtain the requirement and have an electrician assess it. Clarify whether connection authorisations or additional coordination are needed. Metering responsibilities should remain explicit even when one provider helps organise several stages.

For a ZEOS metering-related enquiry, provide the solar installer’s scope and the retailer’s request. This keeps the conversation focused on the property work that needs assessment without implying ZEOS supplies a retail plan or every metering appointment.
