Prepare for Switchboard Replacement Day

Published 3 min read

Once the scope is agreed, household preparation can make a switchboard visit easier to manage. The electrician controls the electrical work; your role is arranging access and preparing for the agreed interruption.

Prepare for Switchboard Replacement Day

Confirm the work and contact arrangements

Check the appointment, access requirements and expected interruption window with the contractor. Ask whether connection or metering parties also need to attend and who coordinates them. Keep the nominated decision-maker reachable if site conditions require a scope discussion.

Do not treat an estimated completion time as a guarantee. Existing wiring concerns, unexpected conditions or external coordination may change the programme. Ask how updates will be communicated and what practical contingency is sensible for your household.

Identify power-dependent needs early

Tell the contractor about medical equipment, mobility equipment, refrigeration, home working and access systems. Discuss medical needs with the relevant healthcare or equipment provider well before the visit. A household power bank or an assumed short interruption is not an adequate plan for critical equipment.

Follow equipment suppliers’ advice for normal shutdown and restart. Save work and arrange alternative access if a powered gate or garage door will be unavailable. Never connect a generator to household wiring or improvise an extension arrangement to bypass the interruption.

  • Notify all occupants, including anyone working or studying remotely.
  • Plan access for pets, children and visitors away from the work zone.
  • Ask how shared or strata areas will be affected where relevant.

Provide clear access without touching equipment

Move ordinary stored items away from the agreed work area only where safe. Do not remove electrical covers, disturb old panels or handle damaged equipment. If the area has water, scorching, an unusual smell or other hazards, tell the contractor rather than trying to clean it first.

Have relevant plans and prior electrical records available. Ask where occupants should remain during the work and follow the installer’s access restrictions. Do not use switches or restore supply because the work area appears quiet.

Leave time for an explanation at handover

Ask the electrician to explain circuit identification, user-accessible controls and what to do if protection operates later. Confirm which documentation will be provided and any outstanding work. A new enclosure should come with a clear account of the completed scope, not just a tidy appearance.

For a ZEOS switchboard project, raise preparation needs while agreeing the work. The service discussion can identify property-specific constraints without the household attempting electrical checks in advance.
